Although its actual origin is shrouded in uncertainty, there is evidence that The Book of Kells may have been created in the scriptorium of the monastery on Iona then brought to Kells in Ireland during the 8th century to evade the Vikings. The first indication of the existence of the manuscript that we call the Book of Kells is an account, not in Latin but in Irish, of a theft at Kells in the year 1007 AD. The wild yet controlled geometric pattern shown on this plaque depicts the very heart of Celtic art, showing how they delighted in both order and disorder.
