While the Book of Kells is possibly the finest work of manuscript illustration ever designed, its origin is shrouded in uncertainty. While it has some features that link it with 8th century Ireland, there are other elements that point to an early Church in Northumbria. Bird figures are often found in Celtic symbolism since they travel freely between heaven and earth. They were considered possessors of secrets and were acknowledged as heavenly messengers. Eagles can look at the sun, signifying prophecy; storks bring souls to earth; owls know the secrets of the night, while nightingales and doves hold the secrets of love.
