Name: DOUBLE JAGUAR SCEPTER

This very fine double headed scepter was molded directly from the original hand carved jadeite piece. It was a symbol of authority to the Colima People, probably a ruler's or Shaman's scepter (similar to a judge's gavel). Shamans were responsible for crops, the rain, healing the sick, and dealing with the ordinary and mystical events of daily life. It was also believed they could communicate with, or transform into, various animals. The jaguar was associated with power, and virility, and was connected with spirits of the Underworld. During ceremonies this scepter would have symbolized the bond between the life force of the holder and the jaguar.
