Name: THE VISION - LINTEL 25
Time: AD 725
Location: Yaxchilan, Mexico
One of the principle cities of the ancient Maya, Yaxchilan, is situated along the Usumacinta River in Chiapas, Mexico. It was a kingdom that was ruled by a single dynasty throughout its 500 year recorded history. This full-size reproduction of a lintel stone commemorates the accession of one of its kings, Shield-Jaguar. The lintel is one of three related sculptures that are found in the central structure of Yaxchilan, each depicting a different bloodletting ritual. The female figure represents Lady Xoc (his principal wife) summoning the founder of the dynasty, Yat-Balam through a bloodletting ritual in her husband's honor. She raises the Vision Serpent by burning her personal blood sacrifice in the bowl at her feet and the vision of the founder emerges from the mouth of the serpent in the form of a warrior. It is evident that Lady Xoc was a powerful figure. Her kinship with two powerful lineages in the kingdom kept Shield-Jaguar's throne intact. Truly, behind every powerful man stands a powerful woman.
