In 1870, while excavating a mound near Lafeyette Bayou in Mississippi's Issaquena County, archaeologists uncovered a stone tablet with strange figures carved in it. The motif of two bird-headed serpents bears a striking resemblance to the feathered serpent that appears in much of the art of central and southern Mexico from centuries earlier, suggesting that they may have influenced the mysterious Moundbuilders of North America.
