Want a servant forever? Carve out a Ushabti, the servant for the after-life. Ushabti literally means "answerer", "I come", or, "here I am". These little figures began being placed in tombs with the deceased during the Middle Kingdom period - 1500 - 1200 B.C. and their use continued through the end of Egypt's Dynastic period, around 200 B.C. They were wrapped as a mummiform but their hands protruded from the bandages so they could do the work required of them. The Egyptians, being an agrarian society, believed the after-life would be the same, thus they would need servants to plant the fields and build the canals for their lord. The more important the deceased, the more ushabtis he would have. Pharoahs had over a thousand ushabtis who they believed would come to life and serve them. Most ushabtis, as is the original of this one, are made of faience, a paste made of ground quartz or sand and quartz, and most had hieroglyphs painted in black denoting their station in life.
