In many cultures a person's reflection is considered sacred. Mirrors have therefore been prized for both their practical and magical properties. Egyptian mirrors have long been crafted in similar form - a flat oval plate of polished copper or bronze with a wooden or bone handle. Since before the Middle Kingdom, the Sun-Disk provided a model for mirrors, as in the case of this reproduction. The handle is shaped in the form of the Goddess Isis. In the ancient Egyptian religion, two mirrors were used as offerings to some goddesses, usually Isis, Hator or Mut. The original of this piece is in the Louvre Museum in Paris.
