Name: CHILD'S FUNERAL MASK
Time: c. AD 200 - 300 (Coptic Period)
Location: Egypt
A handsome Egyptian child of noble birth who died in the flower of youth. The wonder one can see in this funeral mask from AD 200 to 300, belies the very high children's mortality rate from gastric disorders and dysentery. Living in poor hygienic conditions, children born into this Egyptian world had to endure and survive many diseases borne by their water and food. That such a lovely portrait was made indicates that this child was probably an aristocrat, perhaps of a family of the priestly orders. This mask of wood covered with gesso was found in a tomb, placed there so that the child's beauty would carry over into the everlasting world.
